From Hunter to Prey: Richard Stark's Parker Returns to Comics

01/24/2025

Richard Stark's anti-hero returns to comic books in the pages of a new French-language adaptation of The Sour Lemon Score. Announced early this month ahead of its March 2025 release, Parker: La Proie is a 112-page graphic novel adapted and translated by Doug Headline, and illustrated by Kieran.

La Proie will be published by Dupuis under their new Aire Noire imprint run by Headline and Olivier Jalabert, seemingly the first of many other crime fiction titles to come -- including a second yet-to-be-announced Parker adaptation. Translated from French, the summary from the publisher's website reads:

"Parker, a big guy with a square jaw and the body of a Hollywood actor, likes to vary his pleasures: sometimes a thief, sometimes a bankrobber or a carjacker. This time, he's come up with a perfect and seemingly risk-free heist. The target? A bank vault in Cedar Falls, a quiet town in Iowa. An easy heist with three seasoned professionals. Things go wrong when the loot is split and one of them decides to go at it alone, shooting his 'associates'. Only Parker gets away and honestly, it's not good news for the traitor..."

To longtime readers of Stark's novels, the title change holds special significance as The Sour Lemon Score marks the beginning of Parker's losing streak in the original series. While it's not the first novel to have Parker out of his depth, it's certainly the first to put him in a significantly more vulnerable position -- for once, he's both hunter and prey.

Parker: La Proie is due for release on March 21st 2025, with a deluxe edition to follow, and can be ordered internationally from Dupuis' website.
